Saint Bartholomew (1st century), named in the gospels and the book of
Acts as an apostle, is one of the twelve. Also called Nathanael,
Bartholomew was brought to Jesus by Philip. An Israelite from Cana,
his name, Bartholomew, means "son of Tolomai." Supposedly, according
to some ancient sources, he preached in India and also Armenia where
he met his death by martyrdom. King Astyages had him flayed and
beheaded, according to tradition, at Abanopolis, on the west coast of
the Caspian Sea. Some sources have him preaching in Mesopotamia,
Persia and Egypt also. An apochryphal writing (one which did not
become scripture) bears his name, The Gospel of Bartholomew. At any
rate, Bartholomew remains one of the twelve apostles who left
everything, after experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit, and who
went out to preach the gospel indiscriminately to the ends of the
earth.

"How . . . could twelve uneducated men, who lived on lakes and
rivers and wastelands, get the idea for such an immense enterprise?
How could men who perhaps had never been to a city or a public square
think of setting out to do battle with the whole world?" -- Saint John
Chrysostom

Scripture
(New Revised Standard Version)

One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last
plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the
wife of the Lamb." And in the spirit he carried me away to a great,
high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of
heaven from God. It has the glory of God and a radiance like a very
rare jewel, like jasper, clear as crystal. It has a great, high wall
with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates
are inscribed the names of the twelve tribes of the Israelites; on the
east there were three gates, on the north three gates, on the south
three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city has
twelve foundations, and on them are the twelve names of the twelve
apostles of the Lamb.

Revelation 21:9b-14

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom
Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the
son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of
Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael
coming to him and said of him, "Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is
no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered
him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I
saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You
are the Sovereign of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to
you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see
greater things then these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say
to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending
and descending upon the Son of earth."

John 1:45-51

Quote of the Day
(Jeannette Batz)

"Healing, loving, raising from the dead -- these are all verbs, full
of active energy, confident of abundance."

'From this then, we draw up our demurrer: If the Lord Jesus Christ sent the
Apostles to preach, no others ought to be received except those appointed
by Christ. For no one knows the Father except the Son, and to him whom
the Son gives a revelation. Nor does it seem that the Son has given revelation
to any others than the Apostles, whom He sent forth to preach what He
revealed to them.'
- Tertullian, The Prescription [Demurrer] Against the Heretics: (200 A.D.)
(This is a Pre-Constantine source and like in all other instances that I am able to find
- there is no difference between the Pre and Post Constantine practice.
In other words, Constantine didn't change this doctrine)
