Saint Monica (c. 331-387), most likely born at Tagaste, North Africa,
married Patricius, and had three children, one of whom became known as
Saint Augustine of Hippo -- whose feast day we celebrate tomorrow.
Monica contended with her husband's violent temper and dissolute way
of life until his conversion and baptism a year before his death. Her
son, Augustine, went to Carthage for his education and proceeded to
live in imitation of the early lifestyle of his father, Patricius.
Monica, his mother, refused to give up on her son, however. She had a
vision which assured her that prayers for him would be answered. Nine
years later Augustine was baptized and Monica entered the blessings of
eternal life in peace. She is considered the patron of married women.
Our knowledge of Monica comes from Confessions, the famous
autobiography of Augustine, in which he recognizes the efforts of
Monica on his behalf.

"Let him be, and continue to pray for him; it is impossible that a
son of so many tears should be lost." --the advice of a bishop to
Monica concerning her son, Augustine

Scripture
(New Revised Standard Version)

Concerning love of your sisters and brothers, you have no need to have
anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to
love one another; and indeed you do love all of your brothers and
sisters throughout Macedonia. But we exhort you to do so more and
more, to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work
with your hands, as we charged you; so that you may command the
respect of outsiders, and be dependent on nobody.

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12

Jesus said to his followers: "For it will be as when householders
going on a journey called their servants and entrusted to them their
property; to one they gave five talents, to another two, to another
one, to each according to the servant's ability. Then they went away.
The servant who had received the five talents went at once and traded
with them and made five talents more. So also, the one who had the two
talents made two talents more. But the servant who had received the
one talent went and dug in the ground and hid the householders' money.

Now after a long time the householders in charge of those servants
came and settled accounts with them. The servant who had received the
five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'You
delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' The
householders replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have
been faithful over a little, we will set you over much; enter into the
joy of our realm.' The servant also who had the two talents came
forward, saying, 'You delivered to me two talents; here it have made
two talents more.' The householders replied, 'Well done, good and
faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, we will set
you over much; enter into the joy of our realm.'

The servant who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'I
knew you to be hard-dealing, reaping where you did not sow, and
gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and
hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' You knew
that we reap where we have not sowed, and gather where we have not
winnowed? Then you ought to have invested our money with the bankers,
and at our coming we should have received what was our own with
interest. So take the talent from this servant, and give it to the one
who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given,
for their increase; but from the one who has not, even what he or she
has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer
darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.'"

Matthew 25:14-30

Quote of the Day
(Sr. Carol Ann Jokerst, CCVI)

"All kinds of work are valuable, be they part of the "planting" phase
or the "watering" phase. Our work may be a small service to others or
it may be a world-shaking enterprise. Whatever we do, it has impact on
the common good."

'The Protestant early Church historian J.N.D. Kelly wrote "on the basis of experience
the Fathers (of the Catholic Church) could be "profoundly convinced of the futility
of arguing with heretics MERELY ON THE BASIS OF SCRIPTURE. The skill and
success with which they twisted its plain meaning made it impossible to reach any
decisive conclusion in that field" '
