Elected pope in 230, Saint Pontian (d. 236), held a Roman synod that
condemned Origenism, a heresy stemming from Origen, a controversial
third century theologian. Shortly afterward, Emperor Maximinus exiled
Pontian to Sardinia where he met Saint Hippolytus (d. c. 235) whose
feast is also celebrated today. At the time Hippolytus was an antipope
but this meeting with Pontian resulted in his reconciliation with the
church. Hippolytus, a Roman priest and theologian, and possibly a
disciple of Saint Irenaeus, had opposed Pope Callistus I because of
his leniency toward Christological heresies. Elected an antipope by a
small group, he remained in this position until he met Pope Pontian.
Hippolytus died on the island of Sardinia from the hardships he
endured in exile. Pope Pontian resigned as pope so that his nephew
could be elected and, according to some sources, was beaten to death.
Scripture
(New Revised Standard Version)
Joshua said to the people: "Now therefore fear God, whom you are to
serve in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods which your
ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Most
High. And if you be unwilling to serve God choose this day whom you
will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region
beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell;
but as for me and my house, we will serve the Most High God. Then the
people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the Most
High to serve other gods; for it is the God of Hosts who brought us
and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of
bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us
in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples, the Amorites
who lived in the land; therefore we also will serve the Most High, who
is our God." But Joshua said to the people, "Can you serve the Most
High God, who is a holy God; a jealous God; who will not forgive your
transgressions or your sins?
If you forsake the Most High and serve foreign gods, then God will
turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good." And
the people said to Joshua, "We will serve the Most High God." Then
Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that
you have chosen to serve God Most High." And they said, "We are
witnesses." He said, "Then put away the foreign gods which are among
you, and incline your heart to the God of Israel." The people said to
Joshua, "Our God we will serve, whose voice we will obey." So Joshua
made a covenant with the people that day and made statutes and
ordinances for them at Shechem. And Joshua wrote these words in the
book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there
under the oak in the sanctuary of God. Joshua said to all the people,
"Behold this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all
the words which God has spoken to us; therefore it shall be a witness
against you, lest you deal falsely with your God." So Joshua sent the
people away to their homes. After these things Joshua the son of Nun,
the servant of God, died, being a hundred and ten years old.
Joshua 24:14-29
Then children were brought to Jesus that he might lay his hands on
them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; but Jesus said, "Let
the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs
the realm of heaven." And he laid his hands on them and went away.
Matthew 19:13-15
Quote of the Day
(Pope John Paul II)
"Give yourself to the service of life, not the work of death . . . .
Violence is the enemy of justice. Only peace can lead the way to true
justice."
